Indian's survival hinging on the results of Pakistan vs Australia match

India approach to the game against the West Indies in a must-win match in Johannesburg on Wednesday in their final group A engagement of the Champions Trophy starts with a prayer on the lips that Pakistan would somehow prevail over Australia by a big margin in the day's first game in Centurion.

If it happens, India would need to up their net run-rate dramatically, besides winning the match, to stand a chance of making the last-four stage.

India presently has a net run-rate of -1.08 whereas Australia has a massive advantage of +1.00 in their favour.

Australia won their opening game against the West Indies by 50 runs and India lost theirs by 54 runs. So if India is to go past Australia's net run-rate, they ought to cover the difference of 104 runs between the two teams.

For instance, if Australia lose their game by 25 runs, India needs to win theirs against the West Indies by 80 runs to prevail and go through to the semi-finals.

However, if Australia bat first and score 250 runs, India need to get their runs inside 40 overs for them to go through.

India's Nightingale Lata Mangeshkar turns eighty

Lata MangeshkarHer golden voice has enthralled millions and as the grande dame of Indian music turns 80 on Monday, Lata Mangeshkar says her only wish is to continue singing till her last breath.

The icon, who first broke onto the music scene with 'Aayega Aanewaala' in "Mahal" (1949), is considered the greatest playback singer in the Indian cinema with more than 50,000 songs to her credit.

Chandrayaan-I confirms presence of water on Moon

Moon Mineralogy Mapper, a NASA instrument onboard Chandrayaan-I -India's maiden moon mission, has detected evidence of water across the lunar surface, scientists announced on Thursday.

Describing as "path-breaking" the evidence of water on Moon by India's Chandrayaan-1 mission, ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair said no lunar odyssey so far had given a "positive" conclusion.

Moon Mineralogy Mapper, a NASA instrument onboard Chandrayaan-I, detected wavelengths of reflected light that would indicate a chemical bond between hydrogen and oxygen in materials on the thin layer of upper soil.

The Moon Mineralogy Mapper or M3 has confirmed existence of water on moon by analysing the data collected from Chandrayaan-I.

The finding ends four-decade long speculation on whether there is water on moon.

Scientists first claimed that water existed on moon about 40 years ago after they analysed rock samples brought to earth as souvenirs by Apollo astronauts.

Chandrayaan-1, launched in October last year, ended prematurely last month ahead of its two-year life span but Nair has maintained that it had achieved 95 percent of its objectives.

Scientists close to making 'Chilly grenade' to take on trouble-makers

Bhoot Jolokiya chilly The Defence Research Laboratory (DRL) at Tezpur in Assam has established after extensive research that the world's hottest chilly 'Bhoot Jolokiya', also called Naga chilly, can indeed be turned into a grenade without being lethal.

Not only that, the extracts of the chilly, exported to the US where it is a favourite among foodies, can also be used as powder to drive away animals, according to scientists in the Defence Research Laboratory.

DRL scientists are working on making the grenade with the hot properties of Bhoot Jolokiya which can be used by the police and the military to disperse unruly mob or for sundry other purposes.

The biggest advantage of the chilly grenade would be its non-lethal nature, said DRL scientist R P Srivastava.

The DRDO and World Wildlife Fund are also working on developing a powder from the chilly that could be coated on fences and ropes to scare away wild elephants who create havoc in many parts of the Northeast.

The Guinness Book of World Records has declared the Bhoot Jolokiya as the hottest chilly in 2007.

India successfully launches Oceansat-2

ISRO placed in orbit seven satellites including Oceansat-2 within a span of 20 minutes on Wednesday, its first successful mission after the abrupt end of the ambitious Chandrayaan-I project.

At the end of the 51-hour countdown, the 44.4 meter tall four-stage PSLV-C14 blasted off from the first launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota with ignition of the core first stage and put the satellites in orbit one after another.

Scientists cheered as ISRO's workhorse, PSLV soared majestically into clear skies at 11.51 AM from the spaceport in the East Coast in Andhra Pradesh, about 100 km north of Chennai, with the launch watched by Vice President Hamid Ansari
Oceansat-2, the country's 16th remote sensing satellite, will identify potential fishing zones, sea state forecasting and coastal zone studies, besides providing inputs on weather forecasting and climate studies.

A set of six nano satellites rode piggyback accompanying Oceansat-2 on its trip to orbit.

Ansari and senior scientist M G K Menon, who were present in the mission centre, congratulated ISRO scientists soon after the successful launch.

In April 2008, ISRO had launched 10 satellites in a single mission -- one big spacecraft (Cartosat-2A) and nine nano satellites.

Wednesday's PSLV was a core alone version without six strap on motors that surround the first stage in the standard PSLV format.

Oceansat 2 was placed in polar sunsynchronous orbit of 720 km above Earth, as in the case of its predecessor.

WANTED (2009) : Movie Review

Starring: Salman Khan, Ayesha Takia, Vinod Khanna, Mahesh Manjrekar, Prajkash Raj, Govind Namdeo, Inder Kumar, Aseem Merchant, Sajid.
Director: Prabhu Deva

Wanted is a canvas painted in south Indian colours where you can get a glimpse of Rajnikanth in our macho man Salman Khan. Woah hold down It’s a Prabhu Deva film, Bingo

Wanted is undisputedly a well-written story with an excellent screenplay. But there is a flipside to it. It is a well-written story which lacks good direction and editing.

Wanted opens up with an interesting plot with commissioner Ashraf Khan (Govind Namdeo) leaving no stones unturned to eradicate underworld terrorism from the country. Radhe (Salman Khan) is a hardcore gangster known for brutality and commitments. All he knows is the language of money. His loyalties lies with any gang provided the money is right. His entry in Gani Bhai (Prakash Raj) gang under the wing of Golden (Aseem Merchant), the right hand of Gani and betrayal to his existing gang headed by Data Pawle leads to bloodshed, as disputes crop up unexpectedly. However, story takes a twist with Golden’s death, which compels Gani Bhai to take matters in his hands and fly back to India. How Gani Bhai realizes the trap of commissioner Ashraf Khan, and the truth of Salman Khan, would have been an exciting watch had Prabhu Deva tightened his script.

Cinematographers Nirav Shah and S Sriram are simply excellent. Special effects are over the top; could have been subtle. The music is awful, except “Dil Leke’ track, which is the only saving grace.

No refreshing treat for ears, as far as stereotypical dialogues go.
Wanted rides on Salman Khan despite his regular run-of-the-mill, yet nice performance. Ayesha Takia is good and looks gorgeous. Mahesh Manjrekar is perfect for his part as a womanizer. Prakash Raj as Gani Bhai has small, yet pivotal role and lives up to it beautifully. Vinod Khanna and Inder Kumar don’t have much scope, though they are instrumental to the pace of the story. Aseem Merchant is fairly good. Same goes for Govind Namdeo.
On the whole, “Salman Khan’ factor will pull the audience to make this film survive

Habitable moons 'could to be spotted by 2014'

British astronomers have claimed that thousands of moons capable of supporting life, like those shown in the popular Star Wars' flicks, could be scattered all over our galaxy, and are likely to be spotted by 2014.

A team at University College London hopes to track the habitable moons within the next five years, using a telescope launched by US space agency Nasa earlier this year to hunt out other planets.

According to lead astronomer Dr David Kipping, there are more than 12,500 stars within sight of Nasa's Kepler Space Telescope that have the potential for moons orbiting in areas of space where conditions could be favourable to life.

In fact, they have devised a new method for detecting moons in other solar systems -- known as exomoons.

Political observers are of the opinion that the results of the elections are crucial for the ruling CPM. The results will be an indication to the political parties.

The results are crucial as the politicos are eager to know whether ‘wave of change' that started with the general elections and shown its affect in the local body elections is still continues.

Siliguri is considered to be stronghold of the LF, as it emerged victorious in all the SMC polls it contested since 1981. Political analysts said that the division of votes in the Opposition camp lead to the victory of LF.

But the elections are crucial for the opposition camp as the TMC and Congress together fought the elections against the LF.

A Kolkata-based political analyst said that the final picture will be clear after the 2011 assembly elections.

Experiment to trace ice on moon fails due to loss of Chandrayaan-I

chandrayanAn experiment to look for ice in the polar region of the moon has failed with the abrupt loss of India's maiden lunar mission Chandrayaan-I, a scientist associated with the project has said.

A well-coordinated cosmic dance of two mooncraft Chandrayaan-I and NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) was conducted late last month to study the polar craters of the moon which, scientists believe, could be the storehouse of water.

The experiment was attempted on 20th August when both spacecraft were only 20 kilometres apart over Erlanger Crater near the moon's north pole.

A radar on board Chandrayaan-I was to transmit a signal to be bounced off from the interior the crater and picked up by LRO.

But, Chandrayaan-I was pointed in the wrong direction and scientists had no way of knowing it, Spudis told 'Universe Today' website.

Scientists were planning to compare the signal picked up by the LRO with the one picked up by Chandrayaan-I.

The study of the two signals would have provided them with unique information about ice on the polar crater.

Japan launches first cargo rocket to supply ISS

Japan launched its first unmanned cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station on Friday, aiming for a share of space transport after the retirement of the US space shuttle fleet in 2010.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched the HTV transportation vehicle atop an H-2B rocket, which is also on its first flight, as scheduled just after 2:00 am (2230 IST Thursday), agency images showed.

The vehicle separated from the rocket, as planned, about 15 minutes later.

The rocket blasted off from the Tanegashima Space Centre on a southern Japanese island, with the HTV carrying 4.5 tonnes of supplies including food and daily necessities for the six ISS crew, as well as materials for experiments, such as seeds for growing plants in space.

The 10-metre long cylindrical vehicle, which cost 217 million dollars, will deliver the supplies, load waste materials and return to Earth, burning up as it reenters the atmosphere.

European stock markets turning weak in early trading also impacted adversely the trading sentiments.

Bacteria 'to convert waste into power'

Scientists have claimed that bacteria which generate significant amounts of electricity can be used in microbial fuel cells to convert waste into power as well as provide electricity in remote environments.

A team, led by Prof Derek Lovley from the University of Massachusetts, isolated bacteria with large numbers of tiny projections, called pili, which were efficient at transferring electrons to generate power in fuel cells than bacteria with a smooth surface.

In their experiment, the scientists isolated a strain of Geobacter sulfurreducens which they called KN400 that grew prolifically on the graphite anodes of fuel cells.

The bacteria formed a thick biofilm on the anode surface, which conducted electricity. They found large quantities of pilin, a protein that makes the tiny fibres that conduct electricity through the sticky biofilm.

"The filaments form microscopic projections called pili that act as microbial nanowires using this bacterial strain in a fuel cell to generate electricity would greatly increase the cell's power output," Prof Lovley said.

The pili on the bacteria's surface seemed to be primarily for electrical conduction rather than to help them to attach to the anode; mutant forms without pili were still able to stay attached.

Microbial fuel cells can be used in monitoring devices in environments where it is difficult to replace batteries if they fail but to be successful they need to have an efficient and long-lasting source of power.

The scientists have also described in their experiment how G. sulfurreducens strain KN400 might be used in sensors placed on the ocean floor to monitor migration of turtles.

Discovery Shuttle undocks from station & heads home

Seven astronauts aboard the U.S. shuttle Discovery undocked from the International Space Station on Tuesday and set their sights on a Thursday landing in Florida.

Shuttle pilot Kevin Ford backed the craft away from the station as it orbited 223 miles above western China, near the Mongolian border.

Later, Ford backflipped the shuttle around the station so astronauts aboard the outpost could take pictures of Discovery's heat shield.

Discovery's crew will spend the rest of the day on inspections that are part of post-Columbia safety procedures to assure the shuttle was not damaged by debris during its climb to orbit.

So far, NASA has found no damage that would keep Discovery from its scheduled landing at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on September 10 at 7:05 p.m. EDT (2305 GMT).

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi inched closer to a showdown in the men's doubles final after both made the semis with their respective partners, while Yuki Bhambri advanced to boys' singles third round on a good day for the Indians in the US Open in New York.

Fourth seeded Paes and his Czech partner Lukas Dlouhy defeated seventh seeded South African-Belgian pair of Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman 6-3 5-7 6-4.

The Indo-Czech pair has set up a tough clash against top seeds Bob and Mike Bryan of United States in the semifinals.

Third seeds Bhupathi and Bahamian Mark Knowles got the better of the Croat-French team of Ian Ljubicic and Michael Llodra 6-4 4-6 7-6(4).

They will be up against the fifth seeded Belarussian-Israeli duo of Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram in the last-four stage.

Paes had more reason to celebrate as he also inched closer to the mixed doubles title with Zimbabwean Cara Black.

The second seeds made the finals of the event with a 6-2 3-6 10-5 triumph over fifth seeds Su-Wei Hseih of Chinese Taipei and Kevin Ullyet of Zimbabwe.

The Indo-Zimbabwean pair will now take on unseeded Americans Carly Gullickson and Travis Parrott.

It was a mixed day for teen sensation Yuki, who advanced in singles but crashed out of doubles.

The top seeded Delhi-boy had no trouble brushing aside Swiss Sandro Bhrat 6-0 6-1 to make the third round in the singles event. He will now square off against American Jack Sock. However, it was curtains for him in boys' doubles.

Yuki and his Taipei partner Liang-Chi Huang, seeded number one, squandered a set's advantage to go down 6-3 2-6 6-10 to Americans Evan King and Denis Kudla.

Karzai wins absolute majority amid 'clear proof of fraud'

Despite international pressure to carry out recounts, the Afghan Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Tuesday announced that President Hamid Karzai had achieved an absolute majority in the 20th August presidential election.

The UN-backed independent Election Complaints Commission (ECC) reported that there was "clear proof" of fraud in the election, and it ordered the IEC to review votes cast in the relevant polling stations.

The IEC said the latest count showed Karzai had 54.1 per cent of the vote against 28.3 per cent accorded his main challenger Abdullah Abdullah, with 90 percent of the vote counted. A candidate must win at least 50 percent of the vote to avoid a run-off.

Daoud Ali Najafi, IEC chief electoral officer, told a press conference in Kabul on Tuesday that the IEC would not be able to recount the ballots until it counted 100 percent of the votes from the polling stations and announced the preliminary results.

Afghan officials and Western diplomats said Karzai was under increased pressure to allow the body to exclude more "fraudulent votes".
