Shahid Afridi banned for two T20s for ball-tampering

Shahid Afridi has been suspended for two Twenty20 internationals after television cameras caught him biting the ball during his side's two-wicket defeat to Australia in Perth.

Afridi, who was captaining the side, was seen putting the ball to his mouth and apparently biting down on the surface of the ball.

In a hearing straight after the close, match referee Ranjan Madugalle imposed two suspension points on the all-rounder, equating to two T20 matches for his country.

Afridi pleaded guilty to breaching article 2.2.9 of the International Cricket Council's Code Of Conduct after being charged with "changing the condition of the ball in breach of Law 42.3 of the Laws of Cricket" by on-field umpires Asoka de Silva and Paul Reiffel.

Afridi, who captains the Pakistan side in Twenty20 cricket, will miss the match against Australia on February 5 as well as the first of two matches against England in Dubai on February 19.

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam had earlier admitted Afridi's transgression.

Afridi was previously banned for one Test and two ODIs for damaging the pitch with his boot during a Test match with England in 2005 after attention was diverted by an exploding gas canister.

Tiwari was arrested on May 22 the same year from Hyderabad by sleuths of the Kolkata Police.

'Avatar' and 'Titanic': Four Reasons They Became Mega Movie Hits

Not the movie itself -- which, if you haven't seen, means you're either wholly immune to peer pressure and/or uninterested in wearing flimsy frames to watch blue creatures run around for nearly three hours -- but its success, its astonishing success, is a little scary.

"Avatar's" earnings have reached proportions so massive, it wouldn't be a shock if the movie turned into a living, breathing creature that threatened to occupy all screens everywhere until the end of time (not unlike Jay Leno).

Just kidding. James Cameron's latest Golden-Globe-award-winning epic is on pace to eclipse his last epic, "Titanic," with its ever-rising box office earnings.

As of Thursday afternoon, "Avatar's" global gross earnings totaled more than $1.68 billion, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, putting it a relative hair away from "Titanic's" $1.8 billion, the greatest global gross in movie history. (It ought to be noted that if inflation were taken into account, "Titanic's" haul would total $2.4 billion in today's dollars.)

THE STORY

From the misty pages of history comes a story of extreme valor, fierce pride and poignant love.

As the British enslave India with their devious ‘Divide and Rule policy’, kings and nawabs fall to their guile and cunning, and entrust their precious kingdoms to the foreigners.

Except for the brave Pindaris, who prefer death to dishonor and will fight to their last breath to save their land…their mother.

The bravest, the toughest, the strongest of the Pindaris is Veer. As Veer takes on the might of the British Empire, he also has to fight the conniving King of Madavgarh as well his own jealous tribesmen.

But then the stakes are high…

At stake is his love for princess Yashodhara, daughter of his sworn enemy…

At stake is his thirst to avenge his father’s dishonor…

At stake is his very existence itself…

Cannons roar, swords clash in fierce battle, the dead pile up….And when the dust settles down on the blood soaked land… one valiant warrior stands head and shoulders above them all -Veer!

Three IPL Teams To Gain From IPL 3 auction

The newly opened Trident at the Bandra-Kurla Complex played host to the third round of player auctions for the Indian Premier League.

The eight franchisees were given a fresh purse of $750,000 each to select one or two players from among the 51 for auction. This was in sharp contrast to IPL 2 where each had $2 million to pick up two players. All in all, estimates are that over Rs 150 crore was spent on the deals.

West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard and New Zealand's Shane Bond bagged the highest bids when they hit the upper limit of $750,000.

Sources say Mumbai Indians bought Pollard for $2.75 million while Kolkata Knight Riders got Bond into their team for $1.3 million. Both players will pocket $750,000 each, with the rest going to the IPL kitty. A tie-breaker was used twice during the auction for Pollard and Bond.

Kemar Roach, another West Indian player, was secured by Deccan Chargers Hyderabad for $720,000 while South African Wayne Parnel was snapped up by Delhi Daredevils for $610,000. Mohammed Kaif, who formerly played for Rajasthan Royals, went to Kings XI Punjab for $250,000 in the second round of bidding.

Royal Challengers Bangalore bought Eoin Morgan of England for $220,000 while veteran Australian cricketer Damien Martyn was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for his base price of $100,000. South African Yousuf Abdullah and Australian Adam Voges were bought by Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals for their base price of $50,000 each.

The fairly big pool of players coupled with fewer slots to fill up gave franchisees the opportunity to spend cautiously.

Preity Zinta's Kings XI Punjab spent $300,000 while Mr Vijay Mallya's Bangalore Royal Challengers shelled out $220,000.

Shilpa Shetty's Rajasthan Royals spent just $150,000. India Cement-owned Chennai Super Kings ended up being the least spender, putting in just $100,000.

No takers for Pak players.

Team owners did not bid for Pakistan's cricketers since there was a lot of uncertainty on their availability.

australian open 2010: Sharapova makes early exit

The former world number one Maria Sharapova, making her first appearance at Melbourne Park since she won the championship two years ago, became the first major casualty of the tournament when she lost to fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.

Sharapova, unable to defend her title last year because of a shoulder injury, was a shadow of the player who stormed to the 2008 title without dropping a single set, contributing to her own defeat with 66 unforced errors and 11 double faults.

The match was played indoors after tournament organisors closed the giant roof on the Rod Laver Arena as rain disrupted the first day at Melbourne Park.

The Australian Open often falls victim to extreme heat but it was wind and rain that greeted the players when they arrived today.

The start of play on the outside courts was delayed for almost an hour then briefly postponed in the afternoon when the showers returned.

The featured matches went ahead as planned on the centre court and Hisense, which both have retractable roofs, with last year's runner-up, Russia's Dinara Safina, winning her opening match against Magdalena Rybarikova

In annular solar eclipse, the Sun appears as a very bright annulus, which in Latin means 'ring', surrounding the outline of the Moon, giving the appearance of a 'Ring of Fire', Devgun said.
The photosphere of the sun shall be covered by the moon thereby forming a ring of fire in the sky for more than 10 minutes in some parts of India.
The time of maximum eclipse is 07:06:31 UT and the annular phase will lasts over 11 min 08 sec, much longer than a total.

Sri Lanka beat India in tri-nation trophy Final

Indian top guns came a cropper when it mattered most as Sri Lanka spanked them by four wickets in a low-scoring final to lift the cricket tri-series in Mirpur, Bangladesh on Wednesday.

The summit clash demanded a special performance by the Indians who aspire to be the number one ODI team in the world but all they managed was 245 before folding in 48.2 overs, denying their bowling colleagues enough runs to defend.

Things could have been embarrassing for them but for the 106-run stand between Suresh Raina (106) and Ravindra Jadeja (38) and a characteristically brisk 27-ball 42 by Virender Sehwag upfront.

Chasing the target, Sri Lanka fumbled occasionally before eventually cruising to 249 for six in 48.3 overs. For them, Tillakaratne Dilshan (49) and Kumar Sangakkara (55) set the tone and Mahela Jayawardene (71 not out) completed the job

Haiti Country Hit by Powerful Earthquake

The largest earthquake ever recorded in the area rocked Haiti on Tuesday, collapsing a hospital where people screamed for help and damaging other buildings. An aid official described "total disaster and chaos."

Communications were widely disrupted, making it impossible to get a clear picture of damage as powerful aftershocks shook a desperately poor country where many buildings are flimsy. Electricity was out in some places.

The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and was centered about 10 miles (15 kilometers) west of Port-au-Prince, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It had a depth of 5 miles (8 kilometers). It was the largest quake recorded in the area and the first major one since a magnitude-6.7 temblor in 1984, USGS analyst Dale Grant said.

147th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda

In 1984, the Government of India declared to observe the Birthday of Swami Vivekananda (12 January, according to the English calendar) as National Youth Day every year from 1985 onwards.

Swami Vivekananda was born in Shimla Pally, Calcutta at 6:33 a.m on Monday, 12 January 1863.His father Vishwanath Datta was an attorney of Calcutta High Court. His mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi was pious and had practiced austerities and prayed to Vireshwar Shiva of Varanasi to give her a son. She reportedly had a dream in which Shiva rose from his meditation and said that he would be born as her son.

Narendranath started his education at home, later he joined the Metropolitan Institution of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar in 1871 and in 1879 he passed the entrance examination for Presidency College, Calcutta, entering it for a brief period and subsequently shifting to General Assembly's Institution. During the course, he studied western logic, western philosophy and history of European nations. In 1881 he passed the Fine Arts examination and in 1884 he passed the Bachelor of Arts.

From his childhood, he showed inclination towards spirituality and God realization. While searching for a man who could directly demonstrate the reality of God, he came to Ramakrishna and became his disciple. As a guru, Ramakrishna taught him Advaita Vedanta and that all religions are true, and service to man was the most effective worship of God. After the death of his Guru, Vivekananda became a wandering monk, touring the Indian subcontinent and getting a first-hand account of India's condition. He later sailed to Chicago and represented India as a delegate in the 1893 Parliament of World Religions. An eloquent speaker, Vivekananda was invited to several forums in United States and spoke at universities and clubs. He conducted several public and private lectures, disseminating Vedanta, Yoga and Hinduism in America, England and a few other countries in Europe. He also established Vedanta societies in America and England. He later sailed back to India and in 1897 he founded the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, a philanthropic and spiritual organization.

On the day of his death, he taught Shukla-Yajur-Veda to some pupils in the morning at Belur Math. He had a walk with Swami Premananda, a brother-disciple, and gave him instructions concerning the future of the Ramakrishna Math. Vivekananda expired at ten minutes past nine on July 4, 1902 while he was meditating. According to his disciples, this was Mahasamadhi. Afterward, his disciples recorded that they had noticed "a little blood" in the Swami's nostrils, about his mouth and in his eyes. The doctors remarked that it was due to the rupture of a blood-vessel in the brain, but they could not find the real cause of the death. According to his disciples, Brahmarandhra— the aperture in the crown of the head must have been pierced when he attained Mahasamadhi. Vivekananda had fulfilled his own prophecy of not living to be forty-years old.

Jyoti Basu in critical state

CPI-M veteran leader Jyoti Basu is in a critical state.Basu has contracted a bacterial infection, which could threaten his life further as it is resistant to all but three of the 40 antibiotics used in the country.

The acinetobacter bacteria poses a graver danger as Basu’s immunity levels are low at his advanced age of 96 years and could lead to septicemia, an infection of the blood, said pathologists who did not want to be named.

Basu, who was admitted to the AMRI Hospital here with pneumonia on January 1, seems to have caught the infection in the hospital, where his condition is still “very critical”.

“Basu is likely to have acquired the infection in the hospital. He had no such bacterial attack at his residence,” said a senior member of the medical team treating the former chief minister.

Pulmonologist Dr Sumit Sengupta, who is part of the eight-member team of specialists treating Basu, said, “The bacteria could also result from application of broad spectrum antibiotics that have been used on the 96-year-old leader since his admission.”
