Toyota to install reinforcement bar to fix sticky pedal problem
Toyota Motor announced Monday that it has developed a solution to correct the faulty gas pedal that led to a massive recall and sales suspension of several of its top models.
The automaker reported that the parts to fix the pedals are currently being shipped to dealers, many of whom will work extended hours to complete the recall.
On Jan. 30, Toyota ( TM - news - people ) reported that it had reviewed details of its recall plan with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The company also announced that the assembly line shutdown would last for the week of Feb. 1.
Fixing the recalled vehicles will involve inserting a steel reinforcement bar to reduce the friction that led gas pedals to become increasingly unresponsive or, in some cases, stuck. The recall also extends to the European market, where Toyota will recall 1.8 million vehicles. Costs related to the recall, sales suspension and factory shutdown are estimated to reach $1.1 billion.
