Two killed in Karnataka over Taslima's article

Two people were killed as protests in Karnataka over the publication of a translated version of Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen's article in a Kannada daily turned violent on Monday.

Curfew has been clamped in Shimoga city, about 280 km from here, and prohibitory orders imposed in Hassan district, around 200 km from here.

The protesters were expressing their anger over the Kannada translation of Taslima’s article published yesterday in Kannada Prabha, a leading vernacular daily. In the article Taslima wrote that Mohammed Prophet was against burqa.

According to police sources, the protesters burnt 12 two wheelers, two tractors, two auto rickshaws and pelted stones. As the protesters became violent, police open fired and killed a person. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Shimoga and Hassan.
