Christie's, Sotheby's tribute to Tyeb Mehta on Sept 16, 17

Tyeb MehtaLeading auction houses Christie's and Sotheby's will pay a tribute to Indian artist Tyeb Mehta, who died recently, by presenting works from different periods of his oeuvre at two auctions in New York on 16 and 17th September.

Christie's September 16 sale of South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art will also feature over 100 works from leading 20th and 21st century artists from South Asia, including from India and Pakistan.

The sale's cover lot is "Two Figures", a signature work of Mehta from 1994 estimated at USD 600,000-800,000. The painting bears a strong relation to the themes from Mehta's celebration, which sold at Christie's in 2002.

Mehta's iconic "Behind Me Desolation", which was sold at a Sotheby's auction 14 years ago for a record price is the highlight of the auction house's September 17 sale.
