Student injured in NIU shooting
A student at Northern Illinois University was shot and wounded Friday, triggering a brief lockdown of the campus that was lifted after the suspected assailant was caught.
The shooting appears to be an “isolated incident between two individuals” and the shooter was taken into custody. DeKalb police confirmed a person was in custody but would not give further details.
The school said classes were to be held as usual at the 24,000-student university, which is in DeKalb, 65 miles southwest of Chicago.
Last week marked the two-year anniversary of a shooting rampage at the university that left five students dead. Former NIU student Steven Kazmierczak opened fire, killing five students and injuring 12 others before taking his own life. The five students killed were Gayle Dubowski, Catalina Garcia, Julianna Gehant, Ryanne Mace and Daniel Parmenter.
