Chennai Super Kings win IPL 3

Chennai Super Kings beat Mumbai Indians by 22 runs and win their maiden IPL title in the grand finale at the packed D Y Patil Stadium on Sunday.

Electing to bat, Chennai posted 168 for five and then restricted Mumbai to 146 for nine to win their maiden IPL title.

For Chennai, who have been playing in their second final after finishing runners-up to Rajasthan Royals in 2008, it has been a roller coaster ride having made it to the semifinal in their last league match.

Mumbai, who were playing in an IPL final for the first time, were the most consistent side in the tournament having won 10 of their 14 league matches, but they faltered at the final hurdle.

Earlier, Raina took advantage of some sloppy catching by Mumbai Indians as he struck an unbeaten 57 to pilot Chennai Super Kings to 168 for five in the summit clash which was preceded by a 40-minute closing ceremony.

Super Kings to face Mumbai Indians in IPL final

Chennai Super Kings beat defending champions Deccan Chargers by 38 runs in the semi-final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Mumbai on Thursday.

Super Kings will now face Mumbai Indian in Sunday’s final at the same venue.

Opting to bat first, Chennai Super Kings struggled to get 142 runs for seven in 20 overs. Subramaniam Badrinath made patient 41-ball 37 while skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni made 30.

Chasing a modest total, Deccan Chargers were bowled out for 104 runs in 19.2 overs with Andrew Symonds (23) as the top scorer. Chennai Super Kings spinners also did a great job as they dried up the runs at one end while Man of the Match Bollinger picked up the wickets at the D.Y. Sports Academy.

IPL 3 : Rajasthan Royals register first IPL win

Rajasthan Royals defeat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 34 runs and register their first win in the third edition of the Indian Premier League in Ahmedabad on Saturday.

Rajasthan Royals were in desperate need of a win. They first posted a competitive target of 169 and then restricted Kolkata Knight Riders to 134 for five.

Chasing 169 to win, KKR started rather slowly as they scored at nearly six runs per over and once they lost opener Manoj Tiwary in the third over bowled by Yusuf Pathan things further slowed down.

Cheteshwar Pujara and opener Brad Hodge tried to keep the scoreboard ticking and put up a brilliant 50-run partnership for the second wicket before the former's innings was cut shot by Siddharth Trivedi.

Kolkata Knight Riders beat Deccan Chargers by 11 runs

Kolkata Knight Riders beat defending champions Deccan Chargers by 11 runs in the opening match of the third edition of Indian Premier League on Friday.

After Angelo Mathews (65n.o.) and Owais Shah (58n.o.) struck unbeaten half-centuries to rescue Knight Riders from a dismal start and steered them to a fighting 161 for four, the Sourav Ganguly-led side restricted Deccan to 150 for seven at the floodlit DY Patil Stadium.

From 99 for two at the fall of Gilchrist, who played a typically flamboyant innings, the defending champions lost wickets steadily and with that the match too as the other batsmen were not up to the task.

Gilchrist, who struck three fours and as many sixes, powered Chargers in the company of VVS Laxman (22 off 14) to 61 for the first wicket and then to 99 before pulling a long hop from counterpart Brad Hodge (1/14) to deep square leg to depart.
