Classical vocalist Gangubai Hangal passes away
Gangubai Hangal (5 March 1913 – 21 July 2009)
Hindustani classical singer Gangubai Hangal passed away at Lifeline Hospital Hubli (Hubballi) in Karnataka at 7.10 a.m on 21st July 2009 at the age of 97. Padma Bhushan award winner singer was recently admitted to hospital and undergoing treatment for chest congestion for the past two days.
Last night, after developed breathing problems, she was shifted to a super speciality hospital Lifeline Emergency Care Centre in Hubli .
Gangubai, one of the most acclaimed exponents of Khyal Gayki of the Kirana gharana, was born in a family of professional musicians in Dharwad in Karnataka.
Winner of the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards, she mesmerized fans for over six decades with her melodious voice.
