Barack Obama could drop missile sites in East Europe: report

Barack Obama

The Barack Obama administration has alternative plans for missile defense, which could drop planned missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic, the New York Times reported on Saturday.

Quoting official sources, the newspaper said the administration is hopeful to complete a review of the missile defense plans next month, possibly in time for U.S. President Barack Obama to present the new ideas to visiting Russian President Dmitri Medvedev at the annual opening of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

But U.S. officials also cautioned that no decisions had been made and that all options were still under discussion, including retaining the Polish and Czech sites first selected by former U.S. president George W. Bush.

Among the alternatives are dropping either the Polish or Czech site, or both sites, and instead building launching pads or radar installations in Turkey or the Balkans.

The new plan would not be intended to please Russia, but to adjust to "a threat from shorter-range Iranian missiles," according to the officials.

Shania's birthday video bares her life after split

ShaniaCanadian pop star Shania Twain, who split with her husband Robert Mutt in May, offered her fans a peep into her personal life on her 44th birthday.

Twain, who is rumoured to have become a judge on American Idol, Friday posted a 15-minute video on her website, showing her skydiving carefree in Florida, skiing in Switzerland, and riding a Spanish stallion in the Sinai desert, and enjoying tennis matches in Wimbledon.

The video will further fuel speculation about her new love life as she is accompanied by Fred Thiebaud, former husband of Marie-Ann, with whom she has been romantically linked.

There have been rumours of their engagement, but Twain has denied them.

The pop diva, who has been chosen as the Most beautiful Canadian by Hello magazine, says she is sharing her personal life because her fans want to know how she is doing (after her split with her 20-year older Kiwi husband).

Twain writes: "I've been on a few interesting trips, reading some helpful and motivating books, meeting fascinating people and getting the most out of life that I possibly can.

"Living, loving, laughing and dreaming have become highest on my list of priorities."

The pop star says, "I'm okay - yes, I hit a very big bump in the road, but Eja (her son) and Iare doing well and with all the concern you, my fans, have shown over this difficult period, I want you to see for yourself that we are doing fine, by sharing these personal images with you."

Calling Fred 'a dear friend and true gentleman', she says that he "has been the most constant companion of support for both Eja and me, and having gone through the suffering of his family splitting apart at the same time under the same extreme circumstances, he understood me better than anyone.

"We leaned on one another through the ups and downs, taking turns holding each other up. We've become stronger and closer through it all, as have our children Eja and Johanna (Fred's 8 year old daughter)."

Fisichella delivers Force India's first F1 points

After 29 false starts, the Vijay Mallya-owned Force India finally nixed the hoodoo and scored their maiden Formula One points with Giancarlo Fisichella finishing second in the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday.

The 36-year-old Italian driver, rumoured to have one foot in Ferrari, shunned extravagance to run a flawless race and trailed Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari, which had snatched the lead using the Kinetic Energy Recovery System, all the way for a podium finish and earn eight valuable points.

The Italian finished less than a second behind Raikkonen.

Fisichella's Force India teammate Adrian Sutil had a rather rollercoaster outing with the German eventually finishing 11th.

With this, Fisichella renewed his tryst with Spa, which has traditionally been benign to him.

It was at the same track in 1997 that Fisichella had finished second in a Jordan car.

For a car without the KERS boost, Fisichella displayed amazing racecraft in a race marked and marred by opening lap pile-up, early safety car and pit-stop fumbles.

ISRO terminates Chandrayaan-1 moon mission

ISROIndia's maiden Rs 400 crore moon mission Chandrayaan-1 was terminated on Sunday, about one year before the odyssey's expected end, after ISRO failed to restore the snapped communication link with the unmanned spacecraft.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) while announcing that the planned two-year lunar mission, launched amid a national euphoria on 22nd October last year, has been formally called off said it would set up a high level committee to probe the abrupt end.

The mission was abandoned early on Saturday shortly after radio contact with the craft was abruptly lost at 0130 HRS.

ISRO tried to send the commands but the space vehicle was not able to respond. The power signals which go to the computer systems failed.

ISRO scientists said the spacecraft is 200 kms away from the moon and it will take 1,000 days to hit the lunar surface.

Nair said ISRO is constantly in touch with the international partners of Chandrayaan-I and are very much happy with the data collected during the mission.

Installing a Sound Card in Your PC

Just about every home has at least one computer in use. When you buy a computer it comes with a long list of what is included with the system. You might find that your system didn’t come with a sound card.

Most new computers are equipped with a sound card. The sound card allows you to hear what is happening on your computer screen. Some people don’t notice that there is no sound card installed because they don’t use the computer for surfing the Internet. If you are creating and managing documents on your PC no sound is required.

If you are one those computer owners that installs a PC game and finally realizes that you can’t hear anything coming from the screen, don’t be alarmed. You have not gone deaf. All you need is a sound card.

Just about any office supply and computer store sells sound cards. Before buying one, you can check the computer compatibility specifics either on the PC or in the user manual to see if there are any guidelines for choosing a sound card. If you have no clue, you can always ask the store personnel. Describe your computer system and they can recommend a sound card. Creative makes the Sound Blaster series of sound cards that most people are using these days.

Installing a sound card for the first time is relatively simple for anyone to do. Just a few suggestions: Before opening the back of your PC tower, make sure that it is unplugged and you are grounded to avoid any unfortunate accidents. It’s also good to stay away from carpet when performing the installation. Problems with static electricity are not an urban legend.

1. Find your sound card slot on the back of your tower. On most computer towers, empty slots are covered over with a metal bar. Use the first empty slot after an occupied one for the sound card.

2. With a screwdriver, remove the metal bar over the slot.

3. Remove your sound card from its packaging. Be careful not to touch any of the colorful connections on the card as this may damage them.

4. Slide the sound card into the open slot. It will click into place. If you feel any resistance, stop. The card may be inserted upside down. Remove and start again.

5. Once the sound card slides into place screw it back in. turn your PC tower upright and reconnect your peripherals (mouse, keyboard, etc.)

6. Turn on your computer. It should detect the new sound card when it boots up. If not, the instruction manual will guide you through the set up.

You are now ready to hook up those speakers and experience mind-blowing sound at every turn!

India may abandon moon mission after radio link snaps

Chandrayaan-1

India may have to abort its first moon mission after attempts Saturday to restore radio contact with its lunarcraft Chandrayaan-1 proved futile.

The spacecraft, orbiting the moon at a distance of 200 km, last transmitted data to the space agency’s Deep Space Network (DSN), 40 km from Bangalore, at 00:25 IST Saturday.

The 514 kg Chandrayaan orbits the moon every 100 minutes.

Its antenna stopped working due to a sudden failure of the communication systems in the spacecraft. There is no spare antenna to restore the contact.

Scientists are analysing the data at the DSN to check the health of the spacecraft subsystems.

The $80 million (Rs.380 crore) Chandrayaan was launched amid much fanfare Oct 22, 2008 from ISRO’s spaceport Sriharikota, about 90 km northeast of Chennai, on board the 316-tonne polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV-CII), with 11 scientific payloads, including the moon impact probe that was landed on the lunar surface Nov 14.

Shane Warne urges Australia to be aggressive to quell Flintoff factor

Shane Warne

With the Ashes up for grabs during the next five days, Australia needs to play positive cricket from ball one tonight to retain the famous little urn, says former leg spinner Shane Warne in an article for the Herald Sun.

"Australia must remain aggressive and try to win the Test match. The Poms, though, will approach this match with a nothing-to-lose attitude. That''s when a team can be most dangerous - when it has everything to gain," Warne says.

"England has to win here to pinch the Ashes, and its mindset has to be super aggressive, both at selection and on the field. It must play potential match-winners, so Steve Harmison has to get the nod. It will also welcome back Andrew Flintoff with open arms.
